The Department of Home Affairs says a message doing the rounds, that the green barcoded ID book will no longer be valid after 31 March next year, is fake.
The Department’s Thabo Mokgola is adamant that the green ID books will remain legal until they’re ready to roll out the new Smart ID cards at all their offices.
“I can categorically state that no such announcement was made by the department and we do wish to make it clear that the green barcoded ID remains a legal form of identification and will continue to be until such time what we call the live capture system is rolled out to all Home Affairs offices.”
