Greed is causing conflicts in mining communities: Mantashe

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe says greed is the cause of conflicts in mining communities. He was speaking at the Modikwa Platinum Mine near Burgersfort on the border between Limpopo and Mpumalanga, where six miners were brutally killed.

They were burnt to death inside a bus after a petrol bomb attack. Mantashe says some people have been demanding that only locals should be employed at the mines.

“Mining is a blessing but mining is like oil and gas, a curse because once you’ve got mining then comes something that you never planned for called greed. The first way ïzi manifesta ngakho” nobody must work here except us, you begin to monopolise it alone, others must starve to death, you’re greedy.”
