Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Jacob Zuma says his government is working on strategies that will give the youth skills to prepare them to manage the country’s economy.

He’s been addressing thousands of people at the main Human Rights Day event in Sharpeville, south of Johannesburg.

The event commemorates those who lost their lives when apartheid police opened fire on demonstrators on March the 21st 1960. At least 69 people were killed and 186 others injured.

It also celebrates human rights in the new South Africa. Zuma also highlighted the importance of educating the youth.

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe reminded the crowd why they had gathered at the stadium.

Earlier, a group of Economic Freedom Fighter members blocked the street to the stadium, dancing and singing songs praising their leader Julius Malema.

Other political leaders, activists and rights groups will also be holding rallies. -Additional Reporting by SAPA.
