Government needs to protect workers’ rights: Buthelezi

Reading Time: 2 minutes

IFP president Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi says government needs to protect workers’ rights in order to solve the country’s unemployment problem.

Buthelezi was addressing party supporters during a Workers’ Day celebration near eMpangeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.

The IFP went on the campaign trail in deep rural KwesikaMthethwa. The area is neglected and is in need of government services. There is very little infrastructure and economic activity, with the unemployment rate high.

“By voting for the right party, we know this place will change. We have no water; we have nothing in this area. I am qualified graduate however; I am unemployed because there is no growth in this area.”

The party hopes to regain control of the province in the upcoming election. Buthelezi says a strong workforce can help the economy grow and also create employment.

“I know that there are many jobs in which people are abused; earning less than they deserve and being required to work outside the prescripts of labour laws. This is wrong. No one deserves to be exploited even in the struggling economy, even when unemployment is high and people are desperate for jobs.”
