Government hands over PAC activists’ remains

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The remains of 17 PAC political activists who were hanged for political related offences during turmoil in the Eastern Cape between 1960 and 1990 have been handed back to their families in Komani.

Over 130 political prisoners were hanged during this time. They were buried in paupers’ graves in cemeteries in and around Tshwane.

It was an emotional moment for families as they welcomed their loved ones home after nearly 60 years. Vezile Jaxa, Mxolisi Damane, Lennox Mngambi Madikane were among those hanged. The remains of 100 of 130 prisoners have been exhumed.

For the PAC it is the first step in righting the wrongs the apartheid regime committed against its members.

The families will now get a chance to bury their loved ones in their place of choice.
