Government to address District Six housing debacle

The Standing Committee on Human Settlements in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament says it will seek clarity on the District Six housing issue.

The District Six working committee filled an application in the land claims court against government last week.

The Chairperson of the Standing Committee, Matlhodi Maseko says she will be inviting the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Maite Nkoana-Mashabane to appear before the committee.

In their application, the District Six working committee says government has failed in its constitutional obligation regarding land restitution.

The working committee, with over 2000 members, says it represents the interest of all land claimants for restitution between 1995 and 1998.

“These are the mothers and fathers who are among the 2 600 claimants promised a home by 2014. I also call on the Minister and her Department to swiftly address the pertinent issue. The only way to restore the dignity of the community is by redressing the past and ensuring that residents return home without delay,” says Maseko.
