Former Motown singer Gladys Knight will sing the US national anthem at the LIII Super Bowl.

Knight confirmed the news on her social media pages with the message: Atlanta, I’m coming home! #NFL #SBLII”

The news comes with mixed reactions with some feeling she should support former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and not perform.

In a statement the seven-time Grammy Award winner said, “I am proud to use my voice to unite and represent our country in my hometown of Atlanta,” said Gladys Knight, “The NFL recently announced their new social justice platform Inspire Change, and I am honoured to be a part of its inaugural year.”

Past performers of the anthem include Whitney Houston, Beyonce and Mariah Carey.

US network CBS will broadcast the Super Bowl live on February 3.
