The Trek4Mandela team which embarked on a journey to summit Mount Kilimanjaro has returned home.

The 40 hikers left last week in hopes to beat the gruelling mountain to reach Africa’s highest peak on Mandela Day, the 18th of July.

The expedition brought together individuals from a variety of backgrounds to assist in raising funds and creating awareness for the Caring4Girls programme, whose aim is to keep girl children in school during menstruation.

SABC News camera operator Thabo Madiola and reporter Gillian Pillay were part of the group.

Speaking on Morning Live, Pillay says this was not her first summit, “this was one of the hardest summit I have ever done, and we dragged ourselves to Uhuru, the highest peak in Africa.”

Twenty-two out of 46 Trek4Mandela climbers made it to Uhuru. Many climbers succumbed to altitude sickness.
