Gigaba to face Parliament into Gupta family naturalisation

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Contradictory statements by Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba on whether the Gupta brothers are South African citizens or not have come back to haunt him. He will have to explain himself before a full Parliamentary Inquiry.

The decision was made by the Home Affairs Portfolio Committee, after members complained about the confusion caused by the minister’s recent contradictory statements and documents.

The committee will now write to the Speaker’s Office to inform them of its decision, and to request resources for the inquiry. Its terms of reference and timelines are yet to be determined.

African National Congress (ANC) MP Maesela Kekana says:”I am now convinced that there is a case to answer. And without a waste of time, this matter is of public interest and we are here as public representatives to work for the people who put us here – the voters.”

Last month, the Home Affairs Minister held two media briefings in two days. As he tried to explain and clarify confusion around the naturalisation process of some Gupta family members.

Despite his best efforts, MPs seem to be still none the wiser on which of the Gupta brothers are naturalised South African citizens, and which ones are not.

“In respecting the South Africans this matter must be dealt with decisively. So therefore I propose that there should be an inquiry in this matter,” Kekana explained.

EFF MP Hlengiwe Mkhalipi says, “As committee members, we must be ashamed of ourselves because this matter is an old matter that was supposed to be taken care of a very, very long time ago. So I’m supporting the call that says let us go for a full inquiry.”

The Department says it will co-operate with the inquiry and will provide any information required by the MPs.
