Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba has approved the request of the City of Cape Town to make budgetary amendments to assist with their drought relief efforts.

The efforts include the construction of desalination plants around the city to add to the water supply grid.

Cape Town Mayor, Patricia de Lille says the new development will speed up the procurement process.

“The Minister has also informed the City that he has been advised that potential regulatory challenges might hamper successful implementation of the water resilience measures to provide water to our residents. The go-ahead from the Minister allows me as Executive Mayor to immediately incur and approve unforeseen and unavoidable expenditure,” says de Lille.
