Gauteng police ready for elections

Gauteng police say they are ready for any eventuality during elections including possible security breaches.

With over 2 760 voting stations in Gauteng, police say their deployment will be intelligence-driven and responsive.

Gauteng has seen a number of protests in the run up to this elections including in areas such as Alexandra, Bekkersdal, Ennerdale and Westbury.

Gauteng police have appealed to the public to work with them during the elections to fight any criminal elements.

Spokesperson Mathapelo Peters says: “Measures have been put in place in anticipation of possible security breaches that were prevalent in previous elections such as: intimidation of voters and electoral officers; obstruction of voting and the voting process; public violence and malicious damage to property; theft and common robberies at or near voting stations.”

“Furthermore, the safety of children during this election period cannot be over empathised. Parents must at all times be aware of the whereabouts of their children.”
