Gauteng Health slams ‘unprotected’ mortuary strike

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Gauteng Health Department has warned the mortuary workers that their go-slow is unprotected.

The Department has given the workers a final warning to resume their duties or face disciplinary action.

Bereaved families are racing against time as they hope to bury their loved ones this weekend. Many have been camping outside state mortuaries hoping that the bodies of their loved ones would be released to them for burial.

Acting Chief Director for Forensic Medical Services Medupi Modisane says there’s a huge backlog at state mortuaries.

He says all the other duties are being done – but postmortems are not being done.

“The strike is continuing, and we have lodged a legal challenge to declare the strike illegal  which we think it is, and they are in contempt of the previous court order,” says Modisane.
