Gauteng govt to allocate budget to fix R55 road

The Gauteng department of Roads and Transport will allocate a budget to fix the R55 road.

A sinkhole that started on the R55 in Laudium has now spread across both lanes of the route. The road is partially closed.

The sinkhole, which made its appearance two weeks ago, is now said to be about 20 meters deep.

The Esmail family woke up to this sinkhole next to their yard.  They say the problem started last week when cracks appeared widening the road.

Engineers and geologists are trying to get to the root of the problem.

While the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department, tried to keep everything under control, there were snailing traffic queues as motorists stopped to view the sinkhole.

The Esmail family says although they are thankful that no-one has lost their lives, they still feel apprehensive and fearful.

The Centurion, Valhalla area is known to be a dolomatic area.

The Esmail family woke up to the sinkhole next to their yard. They say the problem started last week when cracks were spotted on the road.

Motorists are advised to avoid a short section of the R55 Quagga road between second and Third avenue near Laudium, west of Pretoria.

Gauteng Roads and Transport spokesperson, Melita Madiba has advised motorists to use alternative routes…

“This detour is anticipated to be in effect for the foreseeable future. Motorists are therefore advised to use alternative routes and not attempt to drive on the closed section of the road as it can collapse at anytime.”
