Freedom Day, a people’s celebration

As much as dignitaries are major part of any official government celebration, the reaction of the people on the ground is as important. With the Freedom Day venue packed with people, food vendors, security personnel and general workers, SABC News took a walk around the Union building lawns and captured their voices.
Thabo from Mamelodi, who was in a celebratory mood, says it was an honour to be here and that seeing President Jacob Zuma in person was the highlight for him. He says, “What a wonderful atmosphere, we were so excited to see the entertainment and seeing my President was so nice.”

Food stalls were very busy and there was a variety of food on offer. Food stall operator Lindiwe Hlatswayo says that she is a regular seller at all celebrations at the Union Buildings. She says the vibe of the people is amazing and she does very good business on these days.

“Yes I make a lot of good sales. But being here is more of a reward for me.” When asked what she thought of the President’s speech, she says, “It is good that the President spoke of the difficulties of the people and how the country plans to resolve it.”
Security is a tantamount in an event of this nature, with government officials, foreign dignitaries and celebrities present. A security guard who says he was on duty from very early this morning was keen to show off his important job. He says that he feels proud to protect the President and all the people here. He says that crime is a worrying for him and he takes his job very seriously. “I like to protect the people, they have valuables and cars that are here. My job is to keep them safe and that makes me happy.”
Kids were not left out of the celebrations, with jungle gyms, slides, swings, bungee jumping and other fun activities set up for our young future leaders.With the formalities over the crowds are jiving to local artists performing on the main stage. April 27 every year is a reminder for all South Africans that we are a Rainbow Nation and we should celebrate our freedom. It is a joyous celebration of our democracy and a country we should be so proud of.
