Reading Time: 2 minutes

Disgruntled Free State African National Congress  (ANC) members have welcomed the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) decision to disband the Free State Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).

The NEC made the decision after the Bloemfontein High Court in 2017 declared the provincial conference of the ANC in Parys, null and void.

Disgruntled ANC members have expressed relief over the NEC decision.

Mahlomola Ralebese, an ANC member says they are extremely pleased with the outcome and welcome it.

“Now finally the NEC of the ANC has affirmed the decision of the Bloemfontein high court, declared as null and void the illegal Provincial conference of ANC in Parys, and to have an interim structure in the Free State established; and we will embrace it, and will do everything that we can to ensure that we build and renew the ANC in Free State.”

Political analyst Dr Sethulego Matebesi believes that the ANC must follow democratic practices in order to reclaim the support it has lost.

“I think this is a wonderful opportunity for the ANC, not only in the Free State and not only in KZN, but also nationally, to rid itself of the monster. It’s a monster where the ANC itself seems to have taken anti-democratic decisions, anti-democratic practices within the ANC… It’s a wonderful opportunity, it’s the rightful decisions that have been taken by the NEC of the ANC.”

The ANC in the Free State has also welcomed the NEC’s decision.

Thabo Meeko, ANC provincial spokesperson says there have been engagements between the national leadership of the ANC through officials and province. “Very important understandings were developed out of those engagements –  and one of them is that the national officials, national leadership of the ANC will again come back to the province and explain this decision, and how it is going to be implemented.”
