Four train carriages torched in Cape Town

Metrorail in Cape Town says four train carriages have been damaged on board a train en route to Simon’s Town on Tuesday morning. Two carriages were completely gutted while two others suffered minor damage.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott says the high voltage overhead power was switched off to enable the fire brigade to extinguish the fire and the train crew separated the burning carriages from the rest of the train to prevent further damage.

“Preliminary reports from the scene indicate that all the commuters on board were evacuated at retreat station, and no injuries were reported , the high voltage power was switched off to enable the fire brigade to extinguish the fire,  final mopping up operation will resume as soon as forensics have completed their investigations, and the damaged carriages will be taken to the depot for further investigations and assessment by Prasa’s loss adjusted.”
