The school in the south of Johannesburg linked to a learner assault video, that went viral on Thursday, has suspended four pupils.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school on Friday morning.

Lesufi met the school’s management following the release of the video. He has brushed aside allegations of racism and bullying, “What worries me was the allegations of racism.”

Following the assault, the alleged victim and the perpetrators have been suspended pending a hearing at the end of the month.

“No one knows at this moment what caused the fight, so they must all go to a hearing,” says Lesufi.

The school says it has now changed the number of teachers who will monitor children during breaks.

SGB chairperson Alfred Jafta says, “The MEC says it’s important to instill an anti-bullying culture among pupils.”

Lesufi says his concerns are that while people were fighting, others were just watching and cheering. He plans to return to the school to address pupils and their parents on the matter soon.
