Four people have been killed and two others seriously injured when a truck driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed on the Du Toits Kloof Pass near Worcester in the Boland.

The driver was using the mountainous alternative route to the Huguenot Tunnel on the N1, where motorists have to pay tolls.

Western Cape Provincial Traffic Spokesperson, Kenny Africa says, “In this accident, four occupants in their truck lost their lives and another two were seriously injured and taken to the nearby hospital. Du Toits Kloof pass is closed for traffic, until further notice and motorists are urged to make use of the Hugueenot Tunnel to get to Cape Town or vice versa from Cape Town to Worcester.”

Meanwhile, The National Sea Rescue Institute says rescuers have again had a busy weekend.

Incidents they had to attend to included boats capsizing and a number of near drownings.

Nine people have drowned at various places along the country’s coast since the start of the festive season.

In the last incident a man drowned when a family boat capsized at St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape Sunday.

Among the many incidents that occurred this weekend, were two boats that capsized in Gordons Bay and Hartenbos river mouth respectively.

In Simon’s Town harbour a man on a small dinghy was rescued when he got into difficulty and in Knysna a fire developed in the engine of a 16 foot boat with two local men on board.

At Shelley beach, a chartered boat suffered mechanical failure.

All occupants were safely brought to shore.

And near Melkbosstrand on the West Coast, a 49 year old woman who had fallen off her horse and fractured her arm, was assisted.
