Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former mineworkers in the Northern Cape have received over R120 million in compensation. Department of Mineral Resources, deputy minister, Godfrey Oliphant, held an Imbizo at Pampierstad to address issues faced by ailing former miners.

Thousands of ex-miners attended the Imbizo. The engagements form part of series of nationwide discussions tackling challenges such as compensation and medical examination benefits. Those in attendance welcomed the informative session.

Deputy Minister, Oliphant says his discussion with former miners not only serve as an information session, but to give feedback about the progress of the compensation process:

“In this area  44 people have been paid, but the intention was not just to give report back in the monies, but to see what are the other benefits. Other benefits are such that when you’ve worked in the mines you are entitled to free benefit medical examination at least every two years.

Meanwhile, the long-awaited provincial mining indaba will be held next week.
