Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Botswana government says former President Sir Ketumile Masire remains in ICU at the capital, Gaborone.

Ninety one year old Masire was hospitalised last Friday. He was Botswana’s first vice President after independence in 1966 and then served as President from 1980 until 1998.

Since then he has led various diplomatic initiatives in Africa, including chairing a panel that investigated the 1994 Rwanda Genocide, and co-ordinating the Inter-Congolese National Dialogue.

Botswana Government spokesperson, Jeff Ramsey, says the former President remains stable.

“As we have announced on Saturday that the former president Masire is still hospitalised since Friday and he remains in the ICU even this morning – we are in contact with the family and the doctors – and we will carry out communication is there’s anything to share.”
