Reading Time: 2 minutes

The 25th session of the World Economic Forum on Africa will hold with several sessions dedicated towards finding answers to the continent’s youth high unemployment rate.

More than 1 200 delegates will attend the gathering.

Amnesty International Youth Co-ordinator Edward Ndopu is heading a campaign to encourage more youth to participation in discussions such as the forum.

It’s attracted over 100 young leaders from 31 countries.

They’re trying to find ways in which they can own their future by creating jobs. Over half of Africa’s young people are currently unemployed.

Africa is the largest youth demographic in the world, but when it comes to decision making African youth is largely excluded.

Unemployment has been highlighted as one of the biggest challenges facing young people.

With Africa regarded as the next growth region by developed countries, its working population is expected to double to one-billion
in the next 25 years. With this in mind, the Vice-Chairperson of the Computer Warehouse Group in Nigeria, Austen Okere, says Africa’s young people need to take advantage of opportunities in the fast-changing Information Techology sector.

Okere says this will help to solve some of the continent’s socio-economic challenges.

Some of the young people who’ve engaged with industry leaders include high school learners and university students.

They say skills and access to finance are critically important to enable them to run sustainable businesses.
