Fishermen have netted 350 baskets of sardines at Pennington on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast as the sardine run continues.
Fisherman Preggie Govender says they had to battle rough surf conditions to get their nets out. He estimates that about a hundred sharks were feeding on the sardine shoals.
After the good catches at the weekend, the price per basket has dropped from R1000 to R500.

Govender and other fishermen are nevertheless optimistic that there will be a good sardine run this year.
“This will go on right up to November. It’s just that we will need to extend our permits in September. The sea conditions and shore breaks are very, very bad. It’s the shore breaks that are killing us. It’s hard to launch out and even harder to pull your net out of the water.”
