Fines up to R1 500 for breaking fireworks by-laws

Joburg Metro Police have warned that fines of up to R1 500 will be issued to people who are found breaking by-laws related to fireworks.

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says fireworks cannot be set off in certain places or beyond certain times.

“Fireworks may not be ignited next to animals, old age homes or hospitals to which there may be a fine of R1000. Fireworks displays on agricultural holdings or within 500 meters of a petrol station will be R1500 fine. Fireworks may be ignited on New Year’s Eve from 11pm to 1am and on New Year from 7pm to 10pm. The igniting of fireworks outside designated times will be R500.”
