Representatives of the film industry in BRICS countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are pushing for a formal co-operation treaty in the field of film making.

Industry leaders met in Durban at the start of the BRICS Film Festival.

They talked about proposals to the countries’ ministers of art and culture, which will then be discussed in September, ahead of a summit of heads of states later this year.

South African filmmaker, Sylvia Vollenhoven says it is estimated that by 2021, the combined GDP of BRICS countries will be larger than all of the NATO countries combined.

Vollenhoven says, “What the filmmakers here are saying is that the plan now is to have been for a co-production treaty, but what they want is a co-production and distribution treaty, because we tend to neglect distribution which is probably more important than production in a certain sense. So if out of this meeting we could feed into the development and final design of a co-production and distribution treaty that would be a huge step forward.”
