Farmer’s association praises government for drought relief

Farmer’s association, Agri Northern Cape, has praised government for announcing that it will make about R430-million available for drought relief.

For years, the Northern Cape has battled severe drought with farmers losing about 30% of their livestock.

Some farmers have been forced to leave the sector.

The association’s CEO Henning Myburgh says the R127-million that the Northern Cape will receive from the fund will save the agriculture sector in the province.

“It’s going to save a lot of farmers from going under. So obviously if it could be more it would be very welcome and for a longer time period. But we are not going to complain. This assistance is really vital for us. And it comes exactly at the time when we were beginning to think that we are going to lose a lot of farmers.”
