Faction of Nigeria’s ruling party forms another party

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A faction of Nigeria’s ruling political party the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the formation of a new party bloc.

The new group is made up of members who are aggrieved and pushing to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari in the forthcoming elections in 2019.

The group known as Reformed APC (R-APC) is led by Buba Galadima, a former close ally to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari.

Galadima accused the Buhari led administration of being “inconsistent” and not following through on the promises he made to party members during his campaign for the elections in 2015.

The ruling party, APC, has witnessed several internal wranglings among its members since assuming power. Some of the disputes have degenerated to court cases. This new development is happening after the party’s recent national convention where a new party chairperson emerged.

The group R-APC alleged the convention was marred by irregularities. President Muhammadu Buhari is seeking for a second term in office and analysts believe this may be a set back to his ambition.

Although there has been no official response from the President, there are reports that he is having closed door meetings with leaders of the party for a possible solution to the crisis.

Many Nigerians also believed the President has been unable tackle the economic and security problems in the country because of the distractions from the internal disputes in the ruling party.
