Expropriation does not involve land owned by traditional leaders: Mkhize

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Zweli Mkhize says the expropriation of land without compensation does not involve land owned by traditional leaders.

A task team has been appointed by cabinet to engage traditional leaders on the land issue.

The country’s traditional leaders recently warned the ruling party to exclude land controlled by local chiefs from its plans to expropriate land without compensation.

Mkhize says they needed to clarify the issue of land reform with traditional leaders. “We have therefore clarified the issue that the expropriation of land without compensation will not involve the land under traditional leadership and that’s a process going on in relation to this issue.

“The traditional leaders have raised the question of the security of tenure in the area under traditional leadership they have raised a proposal that government should be issuing title deeds and of course that matter is not bee finalised.”
