Wednesday marks exactly a year since photojournalist, Shiraaz Mohamed, was kidnapped in Syria.

Non-governmental organization, Gift of the Givers Founder, Imtiaaz Sooliman,  says they have received proof that Mohamed is still alive.

Mohamed was captured in Syria on his way back to the Turkish border.

Sooliman says on Monday they received confirmation that Mohamed is still alive, after his captives correctly answered questions that were asked by his family that only he could get right.

Sooliman says the next step is to shed some light as to why he is held and by whom.

“The first stage was to make sure that we are talking to the right people, we have the proof of life, now we wait for them to say exactly what they require, what they want for holding Shiraaz,” says Sooliman.

“Up till now there’s been no demands, no ransom requirement, nothing. So we don’t know why he’s held, where he’s held, who is holding him, what’s the reason. So we are hoping that the same people who gave us the answers to the questions will be able to shed some light on the matter but we have to wait for them,” says Sooliman.
