Three former South African Revenue Service (Sars) officials will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court again in June this year when a date for their trail in the High Court in Pretoria will be established.
Ivan Pillay, Johan van Loggerenberg and Andries Janse van Rensburg allegedly illegally spied on the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) offices in 2007.
It is alleged that they paid Hendrick Lombard R100 000 to put spy equipment in several offices and boardrooms at the NPA.
They allegedly spied on the NPA investigation into the former police commissioner, the late Jackie Selebi as well as on the former head of the NPA, Vusi Pikoli.
The accused’s lawyer, Bernard Hotz says, “My clients feel aggrieved. They feel humiliated that they have been called upon to stand in court to defend them in a matter in which they believe that unfortunately there is an ulterior agenda at play. Having said that my clients will cooperate fully and they have respect for the judiciary and will avail themselves of all the processes which are available to them. It is an interesting thing to note that the state has produced a shocking list of witnesses starting from Mr Moyane, including Mr Makwakwa.”
Meanwhile, NPA Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Louw says there are no outside forces involved with the prosecution of three former SARS officials who were allegedly part of the SARS rogue unit.
Louw says they believe they have a good case against the men.
