eThekwini municipality demolishes illegal billboards

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The eThekwini Municipality is removing billboards that have been illegally erected across Durban. This because due process was not followed in the granting of the rights to erect them.

Some of the billboards were erected on the M4, M13 and M41 highways.

Acting-head of Metro Police Sbonelo Mchunu says the City’s legal unit obtained a court order to remove the illegal billboards.

“We are removing the ones that were put in without the procedure. I can’t mention which ones, because there are a lot of billboards that are put up by advertisers. When we removed these billboards two weeks ago, the owners of the billboards took the municipality to court and they got the court order which was preventing us from removing them, and was instructing us to re-install them. Our legal team challenged that court order and we are now authorised to remove them.”
