EThekwini Municipality’s Malcolm Canham says despite the Durban beach front being packed to capacity, there have been no major incidents.

Canham says lifeguards have been doing a sterling job.

“The numbers also are too many for the safe bathing areas. So, lots of people are slightly outside the red and yellow flags. Our lifeguards are doing a very good job though – a sterling job in trying to corral them and get them back to the safe spaces. Our lifeguards are very aware of what is happening. There have been some rescues. But they are very good and getting people to safety.”

Meanwhile, King Cetshwayo District Municipality Mayor Nonhle Mkhulisi says the beach has claimed the life of a 30-year-old woman in an incident which occurred two weeks ago.

She says crime levels have also decreased this festive period in the district which covers eShowe, uMthonjaneni and Nkandla.

“There’s still peace; there’s joy. Our people are enjoying themselves and are swimming. Children are playing and everyone is safe. There are no incidents that have been reported up to this far. I think all systems are still in place as planned and everybody is here enjoying.”
