eThekwini Metro gives ultimatum to striking employees

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The negotiations are continuing between eThekwini Municipality and striking Durban Solid Waste employees.

The striking workers are demanding permanent employment. The protest action has resulted in a disruption in refuse collection across the city.

The eThekwini Municipality’s Deputy Head of Communications, Mandla Nsele says after a meeting on Sunday it was agreed that staff members would return to work immediately.

Nsele says the municipality has since given all striking employees an ultimatum to return to work by Wednesday or have their contracts terminated.

“We have started now to issue them with the ultimatum. If they don’t return to work, we will be left with no option but to terminate our contract with them. Those who are still on strike will be issued with the last warning  and if they don’t return to work the city will be left with no option but to terminate the contract. At the moment, some are working, some are not. The service is continuing in most parts of the city. We have put in place our contingency plans,” says Nsele.
