The Education for Social Justice Foundation (ESJF) has called on government to build 10 new universities in honour of late struggle icon Winnie-Madikizela Mandela.

The struggle stalwart died at a Johannesburg hospital on Monday at the age of 81.

ESJF Deputy Chairperson Hendrick Makaneta says Madikizela-Mandela’s legacy of enhancing society should be commemorated by addressing the issue of higher education in the country.

Makaneta says the demand for higher education is growing. He’s also called on government to address the problem that could be created by the lowering of academic standards by the Basic Education Department.

He says in the near future, universities will be forced to lower their entrance marks in order to accommodate the influx of students.

This as former President Jacob Zuma announced free higher education for the poor last year during the African National Congress Elective Conference.
