The England Roses have lost their second match in the Sanzea Netball Quad Series in Newcastle, Australia. The Australia Diamonds comfortably beat the Roses by 52 goals to 47.

The two teams met for the first time since England won the Commonwealth Games gold medal play-off in a one-goal boil over five months ago.

The Australian Diamonds met the England Roses after beating South Africa 61-44 in the opening match of the four nation’s series on Saturday. The home side dominated play in the third quarter with brilliant attacking moves, finished off by goal-shooter Caitlin Bassett.

Encouraged by their fans, the Roses tried to look strong and composed.

Australian Diamonds vice-captain, Gabi Simpson admits that it was a really tough game and certainly physical but they managed to come out victorious.

“Absolutely, really happy that when they came back at us we pushed it out again which we were not able to do in Commonwealth Games. So, (I’m) incredibly proud of the growth that we’ve had since then but we’ve got a long to go.”

The England Roses fought back in the last quarter, netting more goals than their opponents but it was too little too late for the visitors as they were unable to overcome Australia’s lead.

English defender, Serena Guthrie says it was clear that they didn’t stick to their game plan.

“I think they had better defence today. We knew they’d win. It’s their home town. We are back at the enemy’s territory again. So, I think for us, it’s just not executing the game plan like we did last when we played them.”

The Australian Diamonds will take on the New Zealand Silver Ferns on Sunday while England will play South Africa on the same day. Author- Lindelwa Godie
