Electricity tariff hikes prompt Galeshewe protests

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Residents of Galeshewe and Roodepan in Kimberley in the Northern Cape are blockading all roads leading to the city with burning tyres and rocks, preventing people from going to work.

They say that they are voicing their frustration with proposed electricity tariff increases that will start from Sunday.

Residents want the Sol Plaatje Municipality to address the high cost of electricity, and cancel the proposed increased upfront payment of R260, which the municipality says will benefit consumers.

They say that it is still not clear how are they going to benefit.

Residents are expected to later march to the civic centre to hand over their memorandum of their grievances.
