Residents of Tyumbu Village in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, are still in shock following the gruesome murder of a 55-year-old woman and her 25-year-old boyfriend.

The bodies of the deceased were discovered by the woman’s granddaughter who alerted villagers and the police.

According to police reports, the suspect or suspects gained entry by bending burglar bars and kicking the door open before fatally shooting the deceased.

The woman is reported to have been in the forefront of a land claim, which caused a dispute among Tyumbu residents.

Family members allege that Nombeko Maxwele had been receiving death threats from people who were dissatisfied with the land claim. They believe her rivals are behind her shooting.

Police are investigating two cases of murder and say they are following possible leads.
