EFF vows to fight for ArcelorMittal contract workers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has vowed to intensify its fight for contract workers to be insourced at ArcelorMittal in the Vaal.

Workers at the metal production giant have been on strike for over seven weeks now, demanding for a scrapping of the use of labour brokers.

Their industrial action coincides with the election season where political parties are looking for an opportunity to secure votes.

The EFF is challenging the president to intervene in the ArcelorMittal strike before the elections. The red barrettes took time off election campaigning to join the metal workers’ protest.

Contracted employees at ArcelorMittal say they do the toughest part of the metal production process, but benefit the least.

In a statement released recently, the metal company, largest globally, warned that insourcing would result in the shedding of jobs.

EFF National Spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says, “A living wage will allow our workers to live with dignity.”

A representative from the company received the memorandum and promised to respond within 48 hours. The EFF says while the Vaal Region is its stronghold, it is hoping this march will help it gain more ground.

Meanwhile, other EFF leaders took the campaign trail to Nelson Mandela Bay.

EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu joined a gathering at the Port Elizabeth city hall handing over a memorandum of demands to Mayor Mongameli Bobani.

“Bobani is a caretaker Mayor here in Nelson Mandela Bay Region. We want change. We want jobs and our people are suffering. All those demands must be met and we don’t compromise. EFF will take over as the decision-makers. We don’t play. We really want to be in government and our focus is winning the elections.”

While both marches were conducted peacefully, the EFF will hope workers will only see red come Election Day.
