EFF a threat to democracy: Brown

Karima Brown
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Journalist and presenter, Karima Brown, has hit back at Economic Freedom Fighters leader, Julius Malema, saying his accusations of her being a State Security spy are unfounded.

This, after Brown accidentally posted an editorial note on the EFF’s WhatsApp media group on Tuesday night, which was supposed to be directed to her media house.

In it, Brown directs the group to monitor Malema’s event on the East Rand – where he met with the elderly to hear their grievances ahead of the May 8 polls.

However, Malema says Brown is out to destroy the EFF. And he believes she is sending a message to spies at the event.

Brown says the EFF is a threat to democracy. “The EFF is a threat to our democracy. I am not going to negotiate with the EFF if I can do my job as a journalist. I am not going to seek their position and I am not going to ask them for the right to do my work. I don’t work for State Security. I am a journalist who is employed at eNCA and 702. I brief journalists everyday and so, what Malema is saying is complete and utter nonsense.”

SANEF outraged and shocked by the actions of EFF leader

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) condemns the systemic, abusive and cruel social media attack levelled against 702 and ENCA Talk Show Host and veteran journalist Karima Brown over the last 24 hours by Economic Freedom Front leader Julius Malema and his supporters.

“We call on the EFF leadership to stop with this vicious attack on the media and allow journalists to do their work without fear and intimidation. The attacks on women in media in particular and the abuse levelled against them is contrary to the spirit of wanting to protect women in a country where violence against women has reached pandemic levels,” reads SANEF’s statement.
