ANC Gauteng Provincial Secretary, Hope Papo says South Africans should learn and follow the steps of former Ambassador and former SABC Board Chairperson, Eddie Funde and continue to fight for the rights of the ordinary citizens.

He paid tribute to Funde at his funeral service at Bryanston Methodist Church in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Former President Kgalema Motlanthe is among the mourners attending the service.

The Presidency has declared an official national funeral for Funde who has been described as a hero who was fearless in fighting for a liberated South Africa.

Papo says he will forever be grateful to Funde for his role in the country.

“As we ponder his illustrious life, we must remember the question of what it is we can learn from his generations. It is a generation that made sure it protected the agenda of a national revolution and a correct path of fighting colonialism of a special kind. And to respond to the challenges of development and under development. It is a generation that taught us we are in a multi-class revolution.”

74-year-old Funde passed away last week after a cardiac arrest. The anti-apartheid activist was part of the ANC’s underground while the organisation was banned.

He will be laid to rest at the Fourways Memorial Park Cemetery later this afternoon.
