EC govt ready to engage residents amid Keiskammahoek protests

Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle says his government is more than ready to give feedback to the protesting residents of Keiskammahoek on the way forward regarding their demands.

This happens as the residents have brought the small town of Keiskammahoek to complete standstill demanding better services. A municipal building was set alight earlier.

Masualle says it’s unfortunate that they have embarked on a protest action as the provincial government was about to implement some of their demands.

“We already have units of plants that have been deployed to the area and that is already doing work. We have confirmed already that the school is to be built and everything in that regard has been done with the community. In respect of the hospital, we have already progressed an amount of 30 million that has been set aside to ensure the refurbishment of the hospital in question,” he says.

Masualle has also appealed to the residents to refrain from destroying the infrastructure in the area.

“During the first action a grader was destroyed, (the only) grader the municipality had and so the community will suffer.”
