EC ANC leadership warns poor performing municipalities

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The ANC in the Eastern Cape has summoned all mayors of the poorly performing municipalities in the province to appear before the provincial leadership at the party provincial headquarters in King William’s Town.

This comes after the PEC has expressed concern about the performance of municipalities like Mnquma, Amathole, Raymond Mhlaba and other newly-established municipalities .

ANC Provincial Chairperson Oscar Mabuyane says some municipalities are battling with financial challenges while others are embroiled in leadership squabbles hampering service delivery.

Mabuyane has warned that heads will roll if the situation does not improve .

“If you can’t perform you  need to stand up and say ‘this is over. I am overwhelmed.’ So that we are able to help because we can’t allow the ANC to degenerate because we feared people that are deployed in government even if they are not doing good in government. So, we are trying to ensure that there is maximum cohesion both in the ANC and government and outside,” he said.

Mabuyane also says both local and provincial spheres of government will be put under the microscope in this calendar year.

“At least an organisation like the ANC – it’s an elder of more than 106 years – cannot lie to our people and say we are going to do A, B, C, D to our people. We must perfect that and be efficient and effective,” he added.
