Eastern Cape protests disrupt voting

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Protest actions have disrupted casting of special votes with 11 people being arrested for alleged public violence in the Eastern Cape alone.

Six people were arrested at Qumbu outside Mthatha and five in Ginsberg near King William’s Town.

On Monday Matatiele residents also embarked on a protest shutting down the town.

Poor road infrastructure has been identified as the reason Matatiele residents embarked on the protest action.

The angry residents say they have been asking for proper roads since 2012. Eastern Cape Transport Department and Matatiele municipality have sent officials to meet with the communities.

The shutdown has since been called off.
