Eastern Cape EMS hopes to resolve dispute with ambulance drivers

Emergency Medical Services management in the Eastern Cape say they are working to resolve the current dispute with employees, mainly ambulance drivers.

Workers claim that they are owed back pay and aren’t being cared for.

The provincial health department has deemed the strike illegal.

Eastern Cape Department of Health spokesperson Lwandile Sicwetsha, says contingency plans involve the use of private ambulances to respond to life-threatening cases until the dispute is resolved.

“It is unfortunate but we are working to resolve the situation. It is an illegal strike but what we’ve done is activated our private ambulances because we have that existing arrangement with them. So if our cars are gone for repairs or in a situation like this we call them to arrange for the private ambulances to respond to the emergency calls,” adds Sicwetsha.
