Reading Time: < 1 minute

People around the world are celebrating Earth Day, a day meant to bring awareness to the importance of protecting the planet.

In celebrating this year’s theme of – BREAK FREE FROM PLASTIC – Greenpeace  is marching at the Moyo Pier in uShaka Marine world.

Johanne Pillay, a volunteer at Greenpeace, says they want to create awareness about the impact of plastics on the  environment.

Pillay says this is a call to government to ban plastic bags in South Africa.

“We’re saying as Greenpeace, something needs to be done. It’s affecting our marine life, it’s contaminating our waters and we need to take a stand and we’re asking the public to please get on board with us. We need to make people more aware that straws, plastic cups, polystyrene anything plastic related especially the plastic bags is at the moment causing so much of damage to our marine life. So we’re trying to bring awareness to the public to say to the rest of South Africa to say to government ban plastic bags. It can be done.”
