More than 40 soccer and netball teams from rural villages around Ingquza Hill and Port St Johns local municipalities gathered at Lutshaya village outside Lusikisiki in the Eastern  Cape to celebrate Christmas through sport.

They took part in a five-day tournament that started on Thursday last week.

Among the soccer teams that took part in the tournament is the Faibe Football Club that plays in the Castle Lager Division, but they did not make it past the quarter finals.

Organiser and sponsor of the tournament Luyanda Mathandabuzo says getting these young people in one place through sport helps them refrain from engaging in illegal activities, especially during the festive season.

A 21 year-old striker from the Rangers Football Club Aphiwe Shonga won the top goal scorer of the tournament after he beat the keeper eight times in the five-day tournament.

The Rangers won the first prize and took home R11 000 in cash.

Shonga’s wish is to play in the Premier Soccer League one day.
