E Cape slain police officer’s burial set for next week

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A policeman who was shot and killed in the line of duty in Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats on Monday will be buried in the Eastern Cape next week.

39-year-old Ncedo Katoyi was shot and killed by six unidentified suspects at Site C, while he and another officer were attending to a complaint.

Katoyi is survived by a wife and three children.

“The wife now is in a difficult situation because now we have to explain to her. Like yesterday, she was confused; she was asking things. I have to come in; I have to assist. It’s a difficult situation, but when time goes on, you hope that after the minister was here and other people, then she will accept it,” says his brother-in-law, Monwabisi Jobela.

Police say they are following various leads in their investigation.

Earlier on Thursday, Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the crime scene and interacted with community members.

“But the suspicion is very strong that one of those people the police encountered the next day must be part of the persons who shot the police. But for now, it’s a suspicion and a thing we are working on.”
