The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took its election campaign to the Eastern Cape. Party leader, Julius Malema, headlined a provincial manifesto rally at the Walter Sisulu University stadium in Mthatha on Saturday.

Malema says the Eastern Cape needs a government that is not corrupt for it to prosper. The EFF is also confident of a strong showing at the polls in May.

The EFF holds two seats in the Eastern Cape Legislature while its holds eight seats in the Buffalo City Metro and six in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

The firebrand party attracted crowds dominated by young people; even those below the voting age threshold came to show their support.

The EFF leader’s list of promises includes access to healthcare in every village and has reiterated the party’s commitment to free education.

Malema says the social grants will be doubled if his party is in government after the 8 May election. He also used the manifesto to urge supporters to treat migrants with respect.

“You don’t call Chinese who are in the country amakwere-kwere, but you call fellow Africans like people from Zimbabwe and Malawi amakwere kwere; why? If you are xenophobic, you can take your vote next door. As Africans, we should love one another.”

The EFF says after winning the upcoming election, it will revamp the way universities are run to make education even more accessible and Malema used the Walter Sisulu University as an example.

“Under EFF, there will be no registration. The science lab will be the best. We will pay your money on time, not this thing done by NSFAS. We want a better learning environment here. We are going to take that SRC; it has been under ANC for a long time.”

The EFF leader’s election strategy was welcome by those who attended the event:

“I like that he spoke about corruption because here in Mthatha, there is a lot of corruption. We need government who is not corrupt.”

“I like the land issue that he explained thoroughly and we know that even the ocean and maritime resources will be brought back to its real owners.”

The taxing of pensions for deceased public servants is something the EFF says it will put to a stop. Malema promised beneficiaries of those monies a reprieve if he becomes president.
