The death toll among initiates in the Eastern Cape has risen to 12.
This follows the death of an initiate in the Chris Hani District Municipality on Saturday.
Details surrounding his death are still sketchy.
Provincial Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department spokesperson, Mamkeli Ngam says the province of the Eastern Cape regretted the report that the number of initiation deaths has increased from 11 to 12.
He says: “On behalf of the MEC of COGTA in the Eastern Cape province, MEC Fikile Xasa we send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and their next of keen for the loss of their loved one.”
“We want to appeal to law enforcement agencies to arrest all those people who have circumcised boys illegally without the permission of parents,” he adds.
