Five initiates from an initiation school in Berlin near King Williams town, in the Eastern Cape, have been arrested for the alleged murder of a 65-year-old woman.

The murder happened late on Sunday night. Police reported that the woman was in the vicinity of the initiation school and she was calling out to the initiates that she was going to bewitch them.

The initiates then allegedly beat her to death with sticks.

The incident comes after Eastern Cape MEC for Traditional Affairs Fikile Xasa said on Thursday that their efforts to curb the death of initiates in the province was yielding good results. This despite the death of 16 initiates during the summer season.

The death toll has decreased compared to the same time last year, which recorded 29 deaths. Xasa said it’s disturbing that nine of the sixteen initiates who died this summer season are from the OR Tambo region.
