A nine-year-old girl has died in a botched hijacking south of Durban.

Police say the little girl who was shot dead in the hijacking at Shallcross on Monday morning was inside the car when the driver was accosted by three attackers.

It is alleged the incident took place in the victim’s driveway near Marklands Secondary School.

The car was recovered a few metres from the scene by an off-duty police officer who apprehended one of the suspects.

Another suspect managed to flee, while a third suspect was attacked by community members and died at the scene.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the child was found with gun shot wounds inside the vehicle and was rushed to hospital where she later died.

Gwala says the owner of the vehicle was accosted by three suspects armed with firearms.

“There was a shooting and the suspects fled off with the complainants vehicle and there was a nine-year-old child inside the vehicle. The suspects drove towards Caucus street where they collided with a truck. Off-duty officers gave chase and apprehended a 39-year-old suspect,” says Gwala.
